How to Maintain your Hot Tub with BaquaSpa
BaquaSpa provides powerful, long-lasting protection against bacteria in your hot tub and is easy to use. Because BaquaSpa is bromine-free and chlorine free, there’s no harsh chemical odour, no burning eyes, no bleached hair or dry, itchy skin. The water feels softer and is much easier on the skin.
NB: When using BaquaSpa you must be careful not to use any non-compatible products, including aromatherapy crystals, or irritation can quickly be experienced.
Simple Start-Up
- 1. Drain and clean your hot tub
- As with any disinfection system you should use a plumbing cleaning product product at every water change to remove the bio-film and other deposits from the plumbing and equipment. Flush your spa's jets and pipework thoroughly with a non-foaming pipe cleaner such as Spa Flush, then drain. Clean the inside of the spa shell with Spa Flush or a Spa Surface Cleaner (do not use household detergents), rinse thoroughly and then refill with fresh water.
- 2. Clean your filters
- Clean your filters using a BaquaSpa compatible filter cleaner, such as Splash Spas Filter Cleaner. Please note that most powdered filter cleaners are not compatible with BaquaSpa. See below for more information on filter cleaning.
- 3. Balance the water
- The function of BaquaSpa is not affected by the total alkalinity or the pH of your water, but with any sanitiser system you should make sure that your water is adequately balanced to protect your equipment and ensure that the water remains comfortable to bathe in.
- Check the water balance for pH, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness. If your fresh water is outside the ranges shown below you should use adjusters to first adjust the total alkalinity and then the pH and finally the Calcium Hardness:
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120ppm
- pH: 7.2 – 7.8
- Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400ppm
- 4. Add BaquaSpa and test
- Add BaquaSpa Waterline Control at the rate of 8ml per 100 litres of spa water.
- Add BaquaSpa Shock at the rate of 16ml per 100 litres of spa water and circulate for 15 minutes.
- Add BaquaSpa Sanitiser with Stain and Scale Control at the rate of 5.6ml per 100 litres of spa water and circulate for 15 minutes.
- Use Biguanide Test Strips to test the BaquaSpa Sanitizer level. If the level is between 30 and 50 ppm, your spa is ready to use.
Weekly Maintenance
- A clear, hassle-free spa is easy if you follow this simple maintenance routine. Once a week you simply need to:
- 1. Step 1 - Top-up Waterline Control
- Add BaquaSpa Waterline Control at the rate of 4ml per 100 litres of spa water volume.
- 2. Step 2 - Shock
- Add BaquaSpa Shock at the rate shown in the dosage chart below [High use is defined as using your tub more than 3 times per week.] and circulate for 15 minutes.
- 3. Step 3 - Top-up Sanitiser
- Test the BaquaSpa sanistiser level using Biguanide test strips. Just dip and read.
- If the level of BaquaSpa sanitiser is below 30 ppm then top it up according to the dosage chart below and circulate for 15 minutes.

Filter Cleaning
- When using BaquaSpa you must take care to use a compatible filter cleaner.
- BaquaSpa is a coagulant which combines bacterial cells and other small particles into particles large enough to be trapped by the hot tub filter. The resulting deposit is a grey sticky film which can only be removed with a BaquaSpa compatible filter cleaner. If any other cleaner is used prior to stripping the film, the cleaner and the film will combine to form a gum like substance which cannot be removed and your filter will have to be replaced. Most liquid filter cleaners, including Splash Spas Filter Cleaner, are compatible with BaquaSpa.
- When using BaquaSpa your filters will need to be cleaned every 4 – 6 weeks. Clean them every 4 weeks if you regularly use your hot tub more than 3 times a week.
- When cleaning your filters follow the procedure below:
- Remove the cartridge(s) from the filter housing and rinse under a tap or with a garden hose, making sure to remove all debris from between the pleats.
- Place filter inside a large plastic bucket and add approximately 20 litres of water to the bucket.
- Add approximately 500ml of Splash Spas Filter Cleaner (or other BaquaSpa compatible filter cleaner) to the water and mix in.
- Allow the cartridge to soak for 24 hours making sure it is immersed completely in the solution.
- Thoroughly rinse the cartridge with a garden hose or under a tap and allow to dry.
- To dispose of the filter cleaning solution discard with plenty of water down a drain.
- If you have a spare filters then, while one set is being cleaned the other set can be in use – achieving optimum spa utilisation. Additionally, if you let your filters properly dry out between uses you will find that they will last much longer.
