Ozone is formed when three atoms of oxygen are bound together, instead of the normal two.  If you have ever detected a faint, sweet smell in the air after a lightning storm, that was ozone!

Ozone is a powerful oxidizer of contaminants in water.  Ozone generators used for spas or hot tubs are called ozonators.

There are two types of ozonator for use in hot tubs.  Ultra Violet (UV) and Corona Discharge (DC). CD ozonators are preferred because they produce a consistent amount of ozone over a very long period of time and are very reliable, whilst UV ozonators lose effectiveness as the bulb gets weaker over time and have more components likely to fail.

It is important to realise that ozonators only kill contaminants in the ozone chamber and provide no residual protection to the main body of hot tub water. Consequently, they can only be effective when water is circulating. Even the best ozone units will not totally eliminate the need for chemical oxidizing agents (such as chlorine, bromine or active oxygen) in the spa water.  Never-the-less, they do help greatly with spa water disinfection and reduce the amount of chemicals needed.

To be effective, you should run your ozonator at least 4-6 hours per day.  If your spa filter/pump is controlled by a timer, a good method is to set it to run for two 2 to 4 hour cycles, 12 hours apart, each day.

Benefits of Ozonators in Hot Tubs

Ozone purifies water and air very quickly and efficiently, 3,000 times faster than chlorine, leaving no by-products except pure oxygen.

In the quantities needed for water purification, ozone has no noticeable odour, taste or colour. It is not irritating to humans or equipment.

Ozone oxidizes soap, deodorant, hair spray, makeup, perfume, body lotion, hand cream, sun tan lotion, saliva, and urine.
