Ozone is formed when three atoms of oxygen are bound together, instead of the normal two. If you have ever detected a faint, sweet smell in the air after a lightning storm, that was ozone!

Ozone is a powerful oxidizer of contaminants in water. Ozone generators used for spas or hot tubs are called ozonators.

Ozonators help with spa water disinfection and reduce the amount of chemicals needed

There are two types of ozonator for use in hot tubs. Ultra Violet (UV) and Corona Discharge (DC). CD ozonators are preferred because they produce a consistent amount of ozone over a very long period of time and are very reliable, whilst UV ozonators lose effectiveness as the bulb gets weaker over time and have more components likely to fail.

It is important to realise that ozonators only kill contaminants in the ozone chamber and provide no residual protection to the main body of hot tub water. Consequently, they can only be effective when water is circulating. Even the best ozone units will not totally eliminate the need for chemical oxidizing agents (such as chlorine, bromine or active oxygen) in the spa water. Never-the-less, they do help greatly with spa water disinfection and reduce the amount of chemicals needed.

To be effective, you should run your ozonator at least 4-6 hours per day. If your spa filter/pump is controlled by a timer, a good method is to set it to run for two 2 to 4 hour cycles, 12 hours apart, each day.

It is easy to retro fit an ozone generator to a hot tub that is 'ozone ready'.

Benefits of Ozonators in Hot Tubs

Ozone purifies water and air very quickly and efficiently, 3,000 times faster than chlorine, leaving no by-products except pure oxygen.

In the quantities needed for water purification, ozone has no noticeable odour, taste or colour. It is not irritating to humans or equipment.

Ozone oxidizes soap, deodorant, hair spray, makeup, perfume, body lotion, hand cream, sun tan lotion, saliva, and urine.

Used in conjunction with your sanitizer, ozone helps kill pathogenic bacteria, germs, and viruses and helps to oxidize organic contaminants.

Ozone frees up combined chlorine and bromine, thus freeing them to be continuously re-used. Ozone ultimately enhances the performance of chlorine and bromine as well as most other alternative sanitizer systems.

Less chlorine or bromine may be needed to maintain a residual level in the spa water. The quality of water will be dramatically better with the combination of ozone and chlorine or bromine than with chlorine or bromine alone.

Ozone is 100% compatible with alternative purification systems such as Eco One, Aquafinesse, Aquagarde or mineral purifiers such as in the Spa Frog system.

The ozone not only destroys micro-organisms, it also breaks down harmful chemicals, and causes total dissolved solids to clump together for easier removal by the filter.
