How to Maintain your Hot Tub with Pristine Blue

Pristine Blue

In order to use Pristine Blue to sanitize your spa you'll need to perform the following steps:

At Each 3 Monthly Water Change

Clean the Plumbing:
Add half a bottle of Spa Flush or an alternative plumbing cleaner to your existing tub water and turn on all jets and pumps for at least 30 minutes. Remove the filter(s) during this process if you are able to run your pumps without the filters in place. It’s preferable to leave the plumbing cleaner to work overnight if possible.
Drain the Tub:
Use a non-scouring pad to wipe away any deposits left on the shell as the water drains. For significantly dirty spas use a specialist spa surface cleaner. DO NOT use any household cleaners.
Clean the Filter(s):
Rinse any debris from between the pleats under a running tap, or use a Water Wand on your garden hose. Place the filter(s) upright on the bottom shelf of your (clean) dishwasher and use a powdered filter cleaner in the powder dispenser and run the dishwasher on a normal 50ºC wash cycle. If your filter(s) won’t fit in the dishwasher then soak them overnight in a suitable container using a powdered filter cleaner, then rinse thoroughly.
Allow your filter(s) to dry naturally before replacing them in the tub. This is important because the filter material will last much longer if it is allowed to thoroughly dry between uses. Filters can take a very long time to dry so it’s a good idea to keep a spare set and to rotate them each time you clean them.
Refill the tub with clean water:
Experience shows that, when using PristineBlue as a sanitizer, it is a good idea to use a pre-filter when refilling the tub with fresh water to remove common contaminants, particularly metals, from the source water.
Balance the Water:
Test the Total Alkalinity and pH of the water using test strips and adjust, using the directions on the water balance product containers:
  • the Total Alkalinity should be within the range: 30 - 90ppm
  • the pH should be within the range: 7.0 – 7.4
You should first adjust the Total Alkalinity, then when that is in the correct range, adjust the pH. You must persevere until you get the correct balance because the PristineBlue won't work effectively if the balance is outside the required range.
Remove excess calcium from the water
Test the Calcium Hardness of the water using a Calcium Hardness Test Kit.
PristineBlue works best when the calcium hardness of the fresh water in your spa is less than 250 ppm. If the calcium hardness is above this level (as indeed it is in a lot of UK tap water) you then add PristineCheck at a rate of 25ml per 1000 litres of water. Run your tub on the filtration cycle for 4 to 6 hours while PristineCheck sequesters the calcium out of the water and into the filter. Then thoroughly clean your filter again using the process described above.
Apply the Pristine Power shock
Shock with 50g of PristinePower per 1000 litres of water and run the tub on the filtration cycle for a further hour to remove any non-filterable organic matter from the water.
Add the PristineBlue:
Add the initial does of PristineBlue at a rate of 25 ml per 1000 litres of hot tub water.

Regular Maintenance

Daily for the first week, or until the copper level stabilizes:
It has become evident from the experience of some of our customers that when starting an older spa or converting from another water treatment system, sometimes the first dose of PristineBlue can be used up quite quickly, despite the water being properly in balance.  This may be due to biofilm in the pipework and filter.  Consequently we advise testing the copper level and water balance (pH, TA and Calcium Hardness) daily for the first week or so until the readings become stable.
The PristineBlue concentration in the water must be maintained at 0.9 ppm, measured using a Copper Test Kit.
Fortnightly:
Check the water balance using test strips and adjust if necessay.
Check the calcium hardness level using a test kit and adjust as necessary.
Test and maintain the PristineBlue concentration at 0.9ppm
Add PristinePower shock at the rate of 50g per 1000 litres of water to remove non-filterable organic contaminates.   Leave the water to circulate for 15 minutes before getting back into the tub. It is also a good idea to shock after any period of very heavy use or if children have been in the tub (let’s be honest, it’s not a very attractive proposition to get out of that lovely hot water to find the loo!).
Apply the scale and metal stain inhibitor, PristineClean, at a rate of 15 ml per 1000 litres of water.
Clean your filters as described above.
3-Monthly:
Clean the plumbing and change the water as described above.
