Why You Need to Shock Hot Tub Water

The importance of regularly shocking (or oxidising) your hot tub water cannot be overstated.  You will almost definitely have cloudy and, probably, foamy water if you don't use a shock.

During use organic pollutants from bathers and their costumes unavoidably become dissolved in the water. These pollutants include perspiration, body lotions, make-up, urine, soap and fabric conditiioner from costumes. They cannot be removed by the filter and so continually accumulate in the water. Regular shocking will destroy these waste compounds and so reduce foaming and promote better water clarity.

You should use a shock at least once a fortnight and immediately after very heavy use. You should also shock your tub at each water change

Chlorine-based shocks are most effective and only leave a very low chlorine residual in the tub for a short period after use. They don't leave a chlorine smell, are unlikely to cause skin irritation and are compatible with nearly all sanitizers, apart from BaquaSpa and copper-based products, but if you have a strong chlorine allergy then you should use a non-chlorine product.
