Buy Bromine

Bromine is a popular chemical to use as a spa sanitizer and is often used instead of chlorine.

Bromine has some distinct differences from chlorine and works better in hot tubs, with hotter water and low water volume, than chlorine does. However, bromine is sensitive to sunlight, deteriorating rapidly when exposed to the sun, which is why it is seldom used to sanitize swimming pools. Bromine is usually slightly more expensive than chlorine.

Total Bromine: Like chlorine, there are two forms of bromine, free bromine and combined bromine (or bromamines). Together these two forms are called total bromine. Importantly, and unlike chlorine, both forms of bromine are sanitizers, meaning that they can kill bacteria, algae or other living organisms in the water. When using Bromine as a hot tub chemical, be sure to use a test kit that measures the total bromine, since that is the best indicator of the level of sanitizer in your water. The ideal concentration of total bromine in a hot tub is 4 to 6 ppm.

Water Balance: When using bromine as a hot tub chemical sanitizer you must maintain the Total Alkalinity and pH of the water within the following range since, outside this range the sanitizing effect of the bromine is  reduced (albeit the problem is not as great as when using chlorine).

Required Range

Total Alkalinity

125 - 150 ppm (mg/litre)

pH

7.2 - 7.6

Total Bromine

3 - 5 ppm

When using Bromine as a hot tub chemical you; should test your Total Alkalinity and pH every few days and adjust as necessary.  Even if your tub is not in use, you should test the bromine level at least weekly to prevent any build-up of bacteria or algae.

Benefits of Bromine over Chlorine: Here are some reasons why you might want to consider using bromine instead of chlorine:

hot tubs information arrow   The bi-products of bromine use, Bromamines, are much less smelly than Chloramines and sting your eyes less.

hot tubs information arrow   bromine is much less sensitive to changes in pH than chlorine and kills bacteria better over a wider range of pH than chlorine.

eco one hot tub water treatmentTo minimise your use of Bromine, maintain a level of only 1-2  ppm in conjunction with the all natural Eco One Monthly spa treatment.  Eco One will reduce your exposure to the unpleasant effects of chemicals and stabilise the pH in your tub so that frequent water balancing is not required.

DANGER: Do not mix bromine in concentrated form with any other chemicals. Do not add other chemicals to the dispenser when using bromine tablets. A violent reaction leading to fire and/or explosion could result.
