What is Total Alkalinity?

Total Alkalinity is simply a measure of all the alkaline minerals (carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides)  in your water.

When should you reduce the Total Alkalinity of your spa water?

High Total Alkalinity will mean that pH adjustment will be extremely difficult, scale will form and the water clarity in you tub may be affected.

You should maintain total alkalinity levels within the ranges shown in the following table.

Directions for Use to Reduce the Total Alkalinity

Pre-dissolve the required amount of SpaGuard Lo'n'Slo in clean, warm water in a clean container.  Turn on your pumps and pour the mixture evenly around the perimeter of your hot tub.

What is pH?

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of your water.  The pH scale has a range of 0 – 14, with 7.0 being neutral.  Water with a pH below 7.0 is acidic and above 7.0 is alkaline.

A number of factors can affect the pH of your spa water, such as dilution with fresh water, introduction of air, chemicals and bathers, so it is important that it is checked on a regular basis.

What is the optimum level of pH in hot tub water?

The pH level should be maintained within the ranges shown in the following table.

Why should you reduce the pH of your spa water?

Hot tub water with very low pH (acidic water) can cause corrosion of your equipment and staining on the tub surfaces. It can also be very unpleasant to bath in.

In addition many sanitisers do not perform efficiently if the pH of the water is not maintained within a specified range.

Directions for Use to Reduce the pH

Add SpaGuard Lo'n'Slo at a rate of 11g per 1000 litres of spa water. 

Pre-dissolve the required amount of SpaGuard Lo'n'Slo in clean, warm water in a clean container.  Turn on your pumps and pour the mixture evenly around the perimeter of your hot tub.

Wait 2-3 hours and then re-check the pH level.  If the pH is still too high then repeat the procedure.
